How does it work?
The teaching of reading in this course is always of
sentences that bear meaning - not isolated words or
nonsense syllables. These are accompanied by simple
drawings which clarify the meaning. Thus the learner is
not expected to resort to his mother tongue in order to
comprehend.
Reading is by no means a mechanical process. It is
rather an intellectual activity in which both memory and
understanding join forces. While reading, people apply
their knowledge of the world and their understanding of
the context.
Based on the assumption that reading is actually a
global process, this course is a combination of the
global and the analytical approaches. This means that
when teaching reading, the learner is lead to read whole
words within meaningful sentences, rather than building
them up from letters. Then, after having grasped a
sufficient number of words in context, the learner is
introduced to the analytical approach. This occurs
through analyzing whole words into their components
the syllables, analyzing the syllables into their
components the letters and eventually applying the
rules thus mastered into new combinations of letters
and syllables and decoding takes place. For example:
after the learner has been taught to read the word ten,
s/he is expected to be able to read tent, or after learning
hat s/he is expected to be able to read rat, or after s/he
has mastered dress, s/he is expected to be able to read
address.
Because repetition is absolutely vital for the mastering
of a foreign language it can be easily and pleasantly
achieved by singing songs and playing games.
A cassette with songs, some of which are songs of
Brain Gym is available along with a computer program
and scores of games.
Who is the material aimed at?
It is designed for anyone who cannot read English or
who has no knowledge of English at all. It is appropriate
for anyone aged from 6 to 60, or even better from 7 to
70.
